NACOGDOCHES --- California Baptist returned to Jaycees Field on Saturday afternoon for the second game of the WAC series against the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks. In a back-and-forth game, the Lancers managed to tie the score 6-6 in the sixth inning, but a seven-run rally from the Lumberjacks would help the home team secure the win 13-6. CBU moves to 9-9 on the season and 3-2 in conference play.
The Lancers got to work early in the first inning and quickly took a 1-0 lead off a single from
Jake Skipworth that scored
Mitchel Simon. The Lumberjacks retaliated with a single home run to tie the game and added four more runs on CBU in the third inning.
In the fifth inning, California Baptist put on a mini-home run derby after sending three solo shots over the 'Jack's fence from
Connor McGuire,
Josh Paino, and Simon.
Ryan Kim then stepped into the batter's box as the Lancers were down by one and crushed another single home run to tie the score 5-5. SFA responded with a single run off of a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth, but a
Michael Carpentier sacrifice fly would send Paino home to tie the game again 6-6.
The Lumberjacks loaded the bases multiple times during the bottom of the eighth inning and tallied seven runs to take a significant lead over the Lancers, solidfying the 13-6 win.
Simon stood out again in the offense for CBU, picking up two hits, a home run, and two RBI. Paino and Skipworth also picked up an RBI and two hits against SFA.
The Lancers and Lumberjacks are set for a rubber match tomorrow afternoon in the series finale at 11:00 a.m. PST.
