MWP PREVIEW: Lancers Prepare for Doubleheader Against Biola and Concordia

9/13/2023 10:00:00 AM

RIVERSIDE - Coming off a successful 3-1 road trip to the East Coast, #16/T11 California Baptist University men's water polo will look to keep momentum on their side during a Thursday doubleheader against a pair of former WWPA foes.

The Lancers are coming off wins against Long Island (24-6), George Washington (19-9), and Bucknell (14-8), with a lone stumble to #6 Princeton amid the run.

After two weeks of tournament play, Logan Puhl leads the Lancers with 13 goals and 24 points, with Caleb Teraoka leading the way with a dozen assists and 16 steals, which also leads the WCC. Senior goalkeeper Trevor Benge is a close second in the conference with 78 saves through eight games, just two behind the league leader from Air Force.

BIOLA AT A GLANCE

The Eagles are just 2-5 so far in 2023 but have faced a daunting schedule thus far. All of Biola's five losses have come at the hands of top-20 ranked Division I programs: #11 UC San Diego (17-4), #20 Navy (13-7), #2 USC (18-2), # 10 UC Irvine (18-7) and #11 UC Santa Barbara (17-12).

Offensively, the Eagles rely heavily on a two-man attack from Nolan Rapp and Maxwell Osborn, who have a combined 28 goals in seven games, accounting for nearly 40% of their team's scoring. Mitchell Carpenter has tallied 53 saves against some quality opponents in the cage.

CONCORDIA AT A GLANCE

The Golden Eagles also started the season off at the Triton Invitational with CBU and Biola, taking four losses to single-digit nationally ranked foes themselves: #9 Long Beach State (25-5), #7 UC Santa Barbara (20-12), #4 Stanford (19-4), and #3 UCLA (29-3). The following tournament in Redlands serves CUI better, taking three wins in four games with a +43 scoring margin.

Eight Golden Eagles have tallied at least seven goals so far this year, but only one is in double-figures already. Jacob Stuart is the point man in the pool for Concordia, netting 16 goals with a nearly 70% shooting percentage through eight games. The CUI goalkeeper staff has allowed 136 goals already this season with a save percentage of just 23.2%, a statistic that does not bode well for Concordia as they are set to face a Lancer squad who scores at a rate over double that so far in 2023.

Both games will be played on Thursday, with the first game being played in La Mirada, hosted by Biola, at 11:00 a.m. The Lancers will head back to Riverside to prepare for game two that same night, hosting Concordia at 7:00 p.m. in the 2023 home opener.
