WBB PREVIEW: Lancers Face Southern Utah In Single-Game Weekend Action

1/17/2024 2:14:00 PM

RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University women's basketball returns home this week to finish the season series against Southern Utah, having already beaten them once this year on November 28, 79-66, in Cedar City.

The Lancers are now 13-2 (5-1 WAC) after a 1-1 weekend, defeating Tarleton State in Stephenville, 89-59, before dropping their first Western Athletic Conference contest of the year two days later to Abilene Christian, 96-93, in overtime. Despite finishing the ACU game with just four players on the court due to injuries and fouls, CBU still had a good shot at the buzzer to extend the game into double overtime.

It was another incredible weekend for Chloe Webb, who averaged 24 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in Texas, including a new career-high 37 points against ACU. That point total is the highest in the WAC this season and comes in at T16 in Division I this year. Her season average of 20.4 is tied for 18th in DI. In total, five Lancers averaged double figures last week, including Filipa Barros (14.5), Kinsley Barrington (12.0), Anaiyah Tu'ua (11.5), and Khloe Lemon (11.0).

SOUTHERN UTAH AT A GLANCE

The reigning WAC champion Thunderbirds have a 4-10 record (2-3 WAC) to start the week but will face in-state rival Utah Tech on Thursday before heading to Riverside. The TBird offense is top-heavy, with three players averaging 13 or more points per game before dropping off drastically. SUU is led by WAC verteran and second-year Cedar City resident, Megan Smith, who started her tenure with Utah Valley. Smith leads the team with 16.2 points and 1.73 blocks per game and is second in rebounds at 6.3.

Statistically, this matchup bodes well for the Lancers, who thrive where SUU struggles to defend the perimeter and sending opponents to the free throw line. The TBirds are second-to-last in the WAC in opponent three-point percentage allowed, with opponents shooting 34.2% on the year, which should be a bright green light for a CBU team that shoots the third most three-pointers in the WAC.

It's a rare doubleheader Saturday for CBU basketball, as the women are set to tipoff against Southern Utah at 1:00 p.m. in the Folwer Events Center. The men will follow on Saturday night against the same SUU Thunderbirds at 5:00 p.m.
