RIVERSIDE - After closing out 2023 with a solid 21-point victory at Texas Southern, the Lancers return from a 15-day hiatus to a full slate of Western Athletic Conference play, beginning at home versus Utah Valley and Seattle U.
No one closed out 2023 stronger than Filipa Barros, who posted three-straight games scoring double-digits, including a season-high 19 against Cal State Fullerton. The Portuguese national averages 12.2 points on the season but has ramped it up to nearly 16 a game since December 16.
Chloe Webb still leads the team in most major categories, including rebounding (7.8 RPG), 3PT% (34.3%), scoring (19.5 PPG), and steals (2.82 SPG). The latter two categories have Webb among the conference and NCAA best, ranking first and second in the WAC and 34th and T-29th in the NCAA, respectively.
UTAH VALLEY AT A GLANCE
The Wolverines enter 2024 with an overall 5-6 record (0-2 WAC), just 1-5 on the road. With a nearly .500 record, UVU is statistically very close to their opponents this season, except for two categories.
The Wolverines are consistently outrebounded this season and are, on average, a -8.1 in the category each game. They make up for that lack of window cleaning with exceptional thievery, averaging over a dozen steals per game, the best mark in the WAC and 14th in the NCAA.
As a team, the Wolverines average just 58.3 points per game and boast no one on the roster who averages over 8.4 points per game.
SEATTLE AT A GLANCE
The Redhawks enter 2024 with a record of just 1-10 (1-1 WAC), but with that single victory coming against WAC foe Utah Valley, 58-48, in Seattle. SU has a NET ranking of 323 out of 360 Division I programs, losing by an average of over 17 points per game. Before arriving in Riverside, the Redhawks will take on Utah Tech on Thursday to open play in 2024.
