RIVERSIDE-- The California Baptist University men's basketball team will put its conference-best five-game winning streak on the line this Saturday as they welcome in the Seattle U Redhawks for Homecoming Weekend.
The Lancers are 13-7 and 6-3 in the Western Athletic Conference after pulling off their first WAC road trip sweep of the season with wins over UTRGV and SFA. The wins have tied CBU with Tarleton for second place in the conference and overall standings and have moved them into fifth place in the WAC Resume Seeding Standings. The winning streak is not only the best in the conference but also the best in DI-Era history for the Lancers.
SCOUTING SEATTLE U:
The Redhawks come into the matchup winners of their last two games, besting Utah Valley and Grand Canyon. The win over Grand Canyon was the first loss for the Lopes in conference play and stopped a 14-game winning streak for GCU. The Redhawks are 5-4 in WAC play and are currently third in the Resume Seeding. The Redhawks have struggled on the road to begin the season, holding just a 1-6 record away from Seattle.
This will be the 13th matchup between the Redhawks and Lancers in program history and the second time the two teams have matched up for Homecoming Weekend. The last time the two teams met on Homecoming the Lancers won in an 88-87 thriller, finished off by a buzzer-beating three by Milan Acquaah. Seattle U, however, won the most recent outing between these two teams at the buzzer when Alex Schumacher converted a putback layup as time expired to beat CBU 48-46 in Seattle in early January.
The Redhawks rank 8th in the country at defending the three-point line, only allowing their opposition to shoot 28% from the perimeter. Cameron Tyson, the Redhawk's leading scorer, is 19th in the country in three-pointers made per game, knocking down over three per contest. Tyson leads the WAC in made threes with 53 and is third in scoring at 17.7.
CBU AT A GLANCE:
The Lancers continue to shine on the defensive end of the court, ranking 30th in the nation in scoring defense. The Lancers hold their opposition to 64.5 points per game and have not surrendered an 80-point game this season. CBU has allowed 70 points only five times this season and has six times held an opponent under 60 points. CBU hits the glass at an impressive rate, hauling in 39 rebounds per game, and has two players ranked in the top 65 in rebounding, Hunter Goodrick (9.1) and Yvan Ouedraogo (8.6).
CBU averages 12.7 offensive rebounds per game, which is good enough for 42nd in the nation in that department. The Lancers outrebound their opposition by an average of 6.3 per contest, which is 35th in the nation and second in the WAC.
Dominique Daniels Jr leads the Lancer offense, averaging just under 19 points per game. Daniels Jr. has recorded three 30-point games this season, the most by a WAC player, including a season-high 39 points against Southern Utah. The 39 points were a DI program for the Lancers, surpassing Milan Acquaah's 37 points against UKMC in 2019. Daniels Jr. has won the WAC Newcomer of the Week the past two weeks and swept the WAC awards two weeks ago after his career performance against Southern Utah.
