CALIFORNIA --- The California Baptist men's water polo team split Sunday after hosting West Coast Conference foe Pacific at the Lancer Aquatic Center and then headed south to face Cal State Fullerton. The Lancers fell to #5 Pacific 18-13 but picked up an evening win over the Titans 15-7. CBU moves to 20-11 overall this season and are 3-2 in WCC play.
GAME 1: CBU 13 - PACIFIC 18
After Senior Day festivities were complete, the Lancers and Tigers got down to business. Having already knocked off one top-five opponent earlier this year, CBU came at Pacific with confidence, striking first courtesy of Bohdi Bowden's opener less than a minute in. The Tigers would assert themselves after that, outscoring CBU 5-1 before the end of the frame to take the early lead.
CBU flipped the script in the second period, led by a pair from Andrew Nuzzo, who would deposit a team-high four goals against the Tigers.
Alex Righetti and
Toring Stanley would help with the scoring before
Marcus Lodewyk would score the final Lancer goal of the second with just 35 seconds left to go into halftime tied at 8-8.
The Tigers regrouped after the break and came out aggressive, scoring five more and holding CBU to a game-low two goals in the period. The fourth quarter started with UoP holding a 13-10 advantage, but the teams traded goals to start the frame, but Pacific would pull away, allowing just one CBU goal in the final three minutes to seal the result.
GAME2: CBU 15 - CSUF 7
The second match of the day proved to be a strong offensive showing for the Lancers in Orange County.
Kevin Rosa's squad came out strong from the first quarter, netting four goals and limiting the Titans to just one.
Rafa Martinez found the back of the net first in the second frame, sending CBU on 4-2 run to halftime where his squad would hold a comfortable six-goal lead.
The Lancers managed to score once in the third frame after losing their footing, but ended the day strong with six goals in the final quarter to push their lead to eight.
Alex Righetti showed out with four goals against CSUF, while George RIce and
Toring Stanley each picked up a brace during the 15-7 victory.
California Baptist will finish its season on the road on Friday against San Jose State to close out WCC regular season play before heading to Stockton, California, to compete in the West Coast Conference Tournament, beginning on November 22nd.Â
