RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist men's water polo is set to head north this week to Stockton, California, to participate in the West Coast Conference Tournament that kicks off on Friday. The four-seeded Lancers are slated to face the five-seeded Santa Clara Broncos during the first round of the tournament, and the winner will play the one-seeded Pacific Tigers during the semifinals. CBU enters the weekend after finishing the regular season in fourth place with a 3-3 WCC record.
The Lancers are coming off a tough loss to San Jose State to finish the regular season, falling to the Spartans 13-12 to secure a fourth-place standing. CBU opened their conference slate well, taking down Santa Clara, LMU, and Air Force during the season. Known for its competitive water polo clubs, all the games this season versus WCC opponents were close matches for the Lancers. This will remain true heading into the postseason as Head Coach Kevin Rosa's squad opens against the Broncos. California Baptist took down Santa Clara back in October 13-12 after Toring Stanley had himself a game with four goals and an assist to lead the Lancers to a narrow victory. Rosa's squad got out to an early lead against the Broncos and netted seven goals in the first frame to keep a lead that was never relinquished for their first WCC win of the year.
After facing the Broncos, the Lancers will then play against the number one seed Pacific during the semifinals for a chance to play in the WCC Tournament Championship. CBU is no stranger to knocking off the one seed and earned an impressive victory over Pepperdine last year during the tournament to compete in the championship. The NCAA 2024 Men's Water Polo National Tournament is set to begin on December 6, and a champion will be crowned on December 8. All WCC Tournament games can be streamed on ESPN+.
