PORTLAND, OR - California Baptist University women's basketball traveled back to Oregon, this time stopping in Portland to take on the Pilots, eventually falling to the home team by a score of 85-66. The Lancers are still in search of their first win after five games while Portland remains undefeated with a 5-0 record.
Freshman Shawnee Nordstrom got her first crack in the starting lineup tonight, posting a career-high 12 points in 34 minutes of work. Fellow freshman CeCe Legaspi also minted a new career high scoring output with a matching dozen on 6-12 shooting. Grace Schmidt led all Lancers with 14 points and seven rebounds.
The opening quarter saw the Lancers taking advantage of a faster pace and outscoring Portland 10-4 on fastbreak points. The Pilots would use an 8-4 run to close out the quarter to build their lead to 22-16 before the end of the first. The second quarter was all Portland for the first seven minutes, opening on a 10-0 run and eventually running it up to a 13-4 run at the 2:54 mark. CBU buckled down after that, closing the half on a 6-0 run of their own to go into halftime trailing 35-26.
Portland's coaches found the magical words at halftime as the Pilots came out swinging and quickly went on an 11-2 run to pull away. Portland would win with efficiency, shooting 95% (18-19) from the free throw line and hitting a season-high 11 three-pointers. The Lancer numbers from inside the arc were good, shooting 24-49 (49%), but struggles from deep and the foul line put the game out of reach for CBU.
The Lancers are back home for one game before the long holiday weekend, set to face off against the Billikens of Saint Louis University on Tuesday, November 26, at 6:00 p.m.
