OREM, UTAH - California Baptist University women's basketball stumbled in Orem tonight, dropping an overtime thriller to Utah Valley, 92-89. The result puts CBU's season record at 19-3 on the year and 11-2 in the Western Athletic Conference.
The Wolverines were ready from the jump, holding the Lancers to just 21.1% shooting in the opening ten minutes, compared to the home team's 40.0%. CBU would storm back in the second quarter, taking a one-point lead into the break while finding their rhythm and shooting over 64% from the field.
The game was neck-and-neck in the second half, shooting well on both ends of the court while playing a clean third and fourth quarters with just 16 combined fouls in those 20 minutes. Tied at 73 in the waning seconds, both teams would get a look with less than five seconds left in the game, but neither would connect, sending CBU to its third overtime game of the season.
While the Lancers had ample opportunities in the overtime period, shooting 5-12 in the five extra minutes and having Utah Valley within one point in the final 15 seconds, the Wolverines were perfect, going 5-5 from the field and 3-3 from distance and connecting on 6-of-8 free throws to claim the three-point victory.
Chloe Webb posted her fourth game this season with 30 or more points while still getting it done on both ends with eight rebounds and six steals. Filipa Barros scored all her 21 points in the second half, topped by nine in the extra frame. Anaiyah Tu'ua put up her first double-double of the season, scoring 16 points while grabbing 11 rebounds, dishing out six assists, and collecting a career-high five steals.
The Lancers return to CBU for a vital contest against Grand Canyon on Saturday. The Lopes will arrive in Riverside with a 21-4 (13-1 WAC) record and a five-game win streak, looking to all but lock up the regular season crown against their closest challengers in the standings. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center.
