CBU Falls to Utah in Malibu

MALIBU--- The California Baptist Baseball program finished their second game of the season in Malibu, California, on Saturday morning against the University of Utah. The Utes walked away with a 9-4 victory against the Lancers, dropping CBU to a 1-1 record on the young season.

California Baptist jumped out to an early lead during the first inning courtesy of Michael Carpentier, who singled to center field to score Julian Alvarez. Utah responded well in the second with a pair of unearned runs to take the lead that was matched by the first home run of the season for the Lancers by Carpentier in the top of the third.

Utah would pile on another pair of runs in the third inning to retake the lead that would not be relinquished through the end of the game. After a triple from Shayne Simpson that scored Nicholas Dumesnil for CBU's third run, Utah extended their lead by four with two-run home runs in the bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the sixth for a total of nine runs. Ryan Kim came up to bat for the Lancers in the eighth inning and hit a well-placed single to drive in Cole Howarth for a fourth run, but CBU was unable to string together a complete comeback.

Jacob Wilson led with four strikeouts across two innings of action for the Lancers, while Mitchel Simon found a team-high three hits across five at-bats. Carpentier added a pair of RBI to his totals on the day and now leads the Lancers with four on the year.

The Lancers will host both squads on Sunday with the University of Utah at noon and Pepperdine University at 4:00 P.M. at Totman Stadium for the program's home opener.
