NACOGDOCHES, TX - California Baptist University women's basketball added another win to their column on Thursday night, but not without having to work a little extra for it. The Lancers ultimately bested the Lady Jacks in overtime, 100-96, to move to 23-3 (15-2 WAC) and keep pace with Grand Canyon, who also won on Thursday.
CBU was led by Chloe Webb and Filipa Barros, who went for 25 and 20, respectively. The due also combined for 15 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals along the way.
Kinsley Barrington and Anaiyah Tu'ua each posted double-digit scoring efforts at 18 and 10 points. Nae Nae Calhoun filled the stat sheet to the brim on Thursday, scoring eight with seven boards, five assists, and a game-high six steals.
The Lancers jumped to a sizable first-quarter lead behind 50% shooting (5-10) from long-range and defensive toughness that blanked SFA from distance (0-7). This led to the Lancers closing the opening 10 minutes up 27-18. The Lady Jacks would find a better shooting rhythm in the second quarter but only managed to shave two points off the deficit before entering halftime trailing CBU, 46-39.
The Lady Jacks closed the gap by one in the third quarter but turned it on in the fourth, outscoring CBU 26-18 and hitting a trio of late free throws to force overtime. Despite SFA's momentum to close out regulation, CBU got off to a hot start in overtime, going on a 7-0 run capped by a clutch three-pointer from Calhoun. The Lady Jacks would momentarily get it back to a one-possession game, but late free throws from Barros and Emily Sewell sealed the victory for the Lancers.
CBU will close out their Texas trip in Edinburg on Saturday afternoon as they take on the UTRGV Vaqueros at noon Pacific time.
