Lancers Battle UCSD on Second Day of Tony Gwynn Classic

LA JOLLA, CA--- The California Baptist baseball program suffered heartbreak on Saturday night as it took on the UC San Diego Tritons during the second match-up of the Tony Gwynn Classic. Things looked to be going the Lancer's way heading into the ninth inning, but a resilient Triton offense would ultimately secure the walk-off win via a CBU throwing error. CBU falls to 4-3 on the season, while UCSD improves to 3-3.

UCSD started on top right out of the gates, plating a trio of runs in the first inning. The Lancers would respond well with six runs of their own at the top of the second, highlighted by a three-run home run by Ryan Kim. After a scoreless three innings, UCSD tied the game with a single and double to string together a brewing comeback. California Baptist would stave off the attack for the time being after Kim knocked a single for his fourth RBI of the evening, and a fielding error from the Tritons brought in CBU's eighth run.

Gary Adcock sent Noah Smith back out to the mound for his third inning of relief at the bottom of the ninth, looking to secure the two-run win. After putting two runners on and one coming across home plate via a sacrifice fly, Adcock would reach for the bullpen again and handed the game to true freshman Sam Burgess. The rookie walked a Triton to load the bases with one out, and Delshaun Lanier stepped up to the plate to hit a ground ball that should have been a standard double play, but a throwing error gave way to a pair of runs for UCSD's walk-off win.

The Lancers will end their weekend against #21 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at Noon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
