SACRAMENTO, CA--- California Baptist baseball claimed a comeback win on Friday afternoon over Sacramento State to even the Western Athletic Conference series. The Lancers were lifted to an 8-4 victory, courtesy of a five-run fifth inning that moves CBU to 22-17 on the season and 5-6 WAC play.
The Lancer offense remained quiet through the first four innings, similar to yesterday's game, while the Hornets jumped out to an impressive start with a two-run lead after the second inning before adding on a pair in the bottom of the fourth. The tides began to turn for the Lancers in the fifth inning, which kicked off with a Julian Alvarez double to put CBU on the board. Another two runs would come in, but Jake Brown would ultimately give Gary Adcock's squad the go-ahead run after he plated two runs with a double that was smoked down the left-field line.
A pair of insurance runs would come through via a double from Ryan Kim before Connor Ross got in on the scoring fun with an RBI single to push CBU's lead to four. Andrew Rudd held things down from the mound for the Lancers through the final five innings, giving up just two hits and collecting five punchouts during his time on the bump. The Lancer pitching staff was effective yet again, combining for nine total Ks and giving up just two free passes across nine innings of work. At the plate, Kim led the way with three RBI while Ben Castelli, Bubba Rocha, and Alvarez all secured a pair of hits.
With tournament seeding on the line, CBU's comeback win puts the Lancers in a good position for a chance at a series win during Saturday's rubber match. The Hornets have managed to work themselves into the top three with their win over the Lancers yesterday, and having the head-to-head advantage come tournament seeding time will be crucial for CBU.
