RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist baseball program closed out its regular season on Saturday afternoon as they welcomed Abilene Christian for the final time this week. Despite dropping the series finale, the Lancers celebrated seven graduates and secured a fifth seed for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament that will begin on Tuesday in Mesa, Arizona. The 7-6 loss drops CBU to 30-26 on the season and 12-12 in conference play.
An early lead for the Wildcats was enough to carry the visitors through the game, while limiting the Lancers to just five hits. Andrew Walters picked up an RBI in the bottom of the third with a well-hit double to the right field wall, and a Julian Alvarez RBI-single added another run to CBU's line. The Lancers' best offensive attack came in the bottom of the ninth after Jake Brown cleared the bases with one swing of the bat, putting the Lancers within one of the Wildcats. ACU's Henry Cone managed to stave off another walk-off comeback from the home team and secured the win 7-6 for his squad. Jacob Wilson looked solid on the mound in his two innings of relief, posting four strikeouts and two hits with no runs.
California Baptist will enter its postseason run for the third consecutive season during the D1 Era, and will face Utah Tech on Tuesday night at 4 p.m. PST at Hohokam Stadium to open the WAC Tournament.
