WAIPAHU, HI--- The California Baptist women's soccer team opened the University of Hawai'i Tournament on Thursday evening, falling to South Dakota State University 1-0. A first-half goal would ultimately seal the Jackrabbit victory, moving CBU to 2-3 on the season.
"We scheduled this challenging non-conference road trip for a reason; To play two teams coming off conference championships and NCAA tournament runs, who also return the majority of those championship rosters," said Kristen St. Clair. "Overall, I thought we were the better team for 60 minutes. The other 30 minutes, we needed to be a little more composed in our possession and sharper in our movement off the ball in the final third but we'll get there. We played with a great deal of heart and fight. We'll take the lessons from this game and continuing getting better".
The Lancers once again suffered an offensive drought, totaling just five shots to SDSU's 15. The lone goal of the match came in the 18th minute of the first half after a Jackrabbit found the bottom left corner of the goal for an early lead that was never relinquished. CBU did secure four corners that they ultimately could not connect on a goal, but showed promise in the final third. SDSU kept Mikayla O'Brien busy between the posts as she totaled seven saves on the night.
The Lancers will now turn their attention to their Sunday match against tournament hosts Hawai'i, which is set for a 5:30 p.m. PST kickoff.
