NORTHRIDGE, CA--- The California Baptist University dropped to 1-2 in the early going of the season after falling to CSUN in its first true road match of the year on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Matadors took the opening set 25-15, capitalizing on a handful of Lancer errors to take the early 1-0 set lead. The Lancers left no doubt in the second set as they quickly built up a lead as large as eight. Olivia Melton gave the squad a much-needed boost of offense with three kills in the frame and provided a defensive spark as well. The Matadors crept within five points, but CBU never let it get closer and would tie the match with the 25-18 victory.
The pivotal third set would go the way of CSUN as their early momentum would carry them to a 25-20 victory and the 2-1 match lead. That momentum bled into the fourth set as the Lancers could not overcome numerous errors. The Matadors would pull away with the 25-16 victory to go undefeated in their home tournament.
Emery DeJong would pace the offense again with a team-high ten kills and would make it a double-double with 11 digs. Gianna Perez led the way with 12 digs while Maddie Brown had 25 assists to cap a solid opening weekend effort. Brown and DeJong's solid opening weekend warranted them All-Tournament honors as they led the Lancers in kills and assists over the weekend, respectively.
NEXT: The Lancers will take a trip to Northern California to compete in the Mission Classic hosted by Santa Clara beginning on Thursday, September 4.
