SANTA CLARA--- The California Baptist University volleyball team opened up day one of the Mission Classic on Thursday evening as they battled the host school, the Santa Clara Broncos.
Santa Clara would take the win in four sets in their home opener as the Lancers fall to 1-3 to begin the season.
The first set was a seesaw affair with the Broncos jumping out to the early advantage and the Lancers responding in haste. CBU's lead would blossom to five before the home squad huddled up for an early timeout. Santa Clara slowly chipped away at the lead and would tie the score at 20 apiece to force Trevor Johnson to regroup his team. Out of the stoppage, the game would be tied three more times before the Broncos would pull away by a score of 25-23 to win the opening set.
The Lancers came into the second set determined not to fall behind 0-2 and did just that with efficient offense and scrappy defense. A large reason for the success of the Lancers was the emergence of Eleftheria Baxa, who totaled two kills, two aces, and a solo block in the period to aid the Lancers on both sides of the ball. Setter Maddie Brown was equally key as she would rack up a double-double through two sets with 14 assists and ten digs.
The third set was another tightly-contested slugfest between the two teams. Santa Clara was the aggressor early and would hold a 9-3 lead minutes into the frame. The Lancers bounced back and got the deficit within one point to force the Broncos to call a timeout. CBU fell behind by four points out of the timeout, but would dig themselves out of the hole to tie and eventually take the lead at 24-23. However, the Broncos would score the final three points of the set and take the period in extra points 26-24 and a 2-1 match advantage.
The Broncos would take full advantage of the momentum and finalize the match in the fourth set by a score of 25-13. Emery DeJong and Baxa would combine for 25 points in the game, with Baxa putting together a solid overall line with five kills, three aces, and four blocks. Brown would produce a final stat total of 24 assists and 12 digs to lead the team in both categories.
NEXT: The Lancers will be back in action for day two of the Santa Clara Mission Classic tomorrow afternoon against UNLV, with first serve set for 2 PM.
