RIVERSIDE, Calif. — It was no secret to both teams knew Thursday's Western Water Polo Association game was crucial when it came to seeding for the fast-approaching conference tournament, resulting in a chaotic fourth quarter.
Â
California Baptist University turned up the intensity late, but could not overcome 15
th-ranked Loyola Marymount at the Lancer Aquatics Center, as the Lions pulled out the 13-11 victory over the No. 19 Lancers.
Â
After going down by five goals, 12-7, with 3:44 to play, CBU kicked into another gear and out scored LMU 4-1 the rest of the way.
Brent Teraoka shouldered most of that load during that run, scoring three-straight CBU goals. His first two goals came within 31 seconds of another on an exclusion and five-meter penalty to bring the Lancers within 12-9 with 2:11 remaining.
Â
The Lions came up with the dagger goal at the 1:15 mark to go back up by four, 13-9. There was still no quit from CBU, with Teraoka scoring again 10 seconds later and then
Tucker Angelo adding his second goal of the contest with 18 ticks left. The Lancers forced a turnover and had one more shot at it, but were out of reach of the victory.
Â
CBU recieved another outstanding performance from
Joseph Moorman. The junior CBU goalie logged 19 saves and two steals in the loss.
Â
In the first quarter, Loyola Marymount took control early by scoring the first two goals of the game. CBU responded and made it a two-goal game, 4-2, going into the break after consecutive scores from
Ryan Penney (two goals) and
Tanner Shore, who finished with two assists and a steal, as well.
Â
LMU won the second frame, 2-1, to go up into halftime 6-3. Moorman earned the Lancers a 3-3 split in the third quarter, with nine huge saves over those eight minutes. The three-goal deficit quickly grew to five, as the Lions scored the first two goals of the fourth in the opening 2:23.
Â
From here, CBU regroups for another big WWPA game at No. 18 Air Force Saturday at 10 a.m. Senior Day is Nov. 6
th, as CBU hosts Redlands in its home finale of 2015 at 7 p.m. Three seniors –
Spencer Shore,
David Ring and
Clint Walling – will be honored at the game.
