LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Zach Parry has already distinguished himself as one of the best divers in all of NCAA Division II, but this week he has a chance to show how he measures up against Division I competition.
Parry, a junior Anaheim Hills native, did not waste his first opportunity on Friday at the University of Southern California's Trojan Diving Invitational. He placed fourth on the 1-meter board in prelims, with 258 points on six dives, to earn a berth to the finals round.
"This is an opportunity for him to continue to get experience at a high level," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "This will prepare him for conference and nationals. Overall, it's a good day, it's always fun to compete at USC."
With 11 other divers from four Division I squads, Parry put on another strong showing in the final round and placed fifth overall with 506.50 points. He topped divers from USC, Bakersfield, Air Force and Cal Poly in the process, and received a big boost from a 64.25-point dive in the finals.
"Parry is in a good place when you look at this competition. It is some of the best in Division I, so we are grateful to get to experience the invitational and get a test for where we're at," Couto said. "For Parry to beat all those guys he did, that's pretty impressive for him being the only Division II diver there."
Saturday gives Parry another chance to prove himself against the best of the best at the Trojan Diving Invitational as he takes a stab at the 3-meter event. CBU will also test itself at the Division I UNLV Invite on Dec. 3rd and Grand Canyon Invite on Jan. 7th.
"We just want to get as many big meets as possible to prepare our athletes for championship season," Couto said.
