CBU Takes on the Best

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Before it hosts its second-annual Lancer Diving Invitational, California Baptist University tested itself to see how it measured up against some of the best competition in all of the NCAA – Division I or II – on Friday at the University of Southern California's Trojan Diving Invitational.
There were seven D-I squads in attendance: USC, UCLA, Bakersfield, San Diego State, Fresno State, Air Force and Cal Poly. Still, CBU received a 23rd-place finish from senior Lauren Skinner on the 3-meter board.
"This is an opportunity for them to continue to get experience at a high level," Dive Coach Jeff Couto said. "This will prepare for conference and nationals. Overall, it's a good day, it's always fun to compete at USC."
Skinner tallied 204.60 points on her six-dive list to beat out divers from Cal Poly, Bakersfield, Air Force and San Diego State.
Three other Lancers in attendance placed 30th to 32nd. Bre Schlenger took 30th with 185.60 points, while Savannah Uhlir was 31st (182.65) and Janae Jizmejian wound up No. 32 (181.55).
"It's intimidating, there are some really talented girls there," Couto said. "Janae and Savannah dove really well to beat out the people they did."
The Trojan Diving Invitational continues Saturday, as CBU's divers will see how they fare on the 1-meter board. The Lancers will also compete at the Division I UNLV Invite Dec. 1st and Grand Canyon Invite Jan. 7th.
"I think this will be a pivotal moment in the success we have down the road," Couto said. "We just want to get as many big meets as possible to prepare our athletes for championship season."
