RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Starting pitching limited both offenses in Saturday's fifth and final winner-take-all game in California Baptist University's Fall World Series Classic. It was the Gold team's late-inning heroics on offense and lights-out bullpen that led it to a 3-0 win and series championship over the Blue team Saturday morning.
It capped off a wild comeback for the Gold team, as it had trailed the Blue squad 2-0 to start the series. Nick Plaia came up with the big hit of the game, a two-run single in the eighth inning, for the Gold team, which received three spotless inning of relief pitching from Seth Kaneen and Brody Robinson.
Garett King and Logan Rinehart each threw six shutout innings for their team. King struck out seven and allowed just five base runners (three hits, two hit by pitch) for the Gold team, while Rinehart struck out six and let five men on (two hits, two hit by pitch, one walk).
Tommy Bell got Gold's offense going with a leadoff single in the eighth inning. Tyler Johnson took his spot on first after a fielder's choice and then moved to second on a DJ Porter single. A wild pitch put them both in scoring position with one out, and then a walk to Sheldon Borson loaded the bases for Plaia. He laced a single to score both Johnson and Porter and Borson then came home on a wild pitch for the 3-0 lead.
Kaneen did not let anyone on board and struck out two during the seventh and eighth innings when he was on the mound in relief for the Gold team. Robinson, the closer, picked up the save in a flawless ninth inning where he punched out two batters.
Andrew Bash, meanwhile, was named the Fall Classic Most Valuable Player after going 7-for-14 with three runs batted in and a 3.52 earned-run average on the mound on the week. Justin Montgomery and King were honored as Fall Classic Most Valuable Pitchers. Montgomery pitched eight innings, allowing only three hits while striking out eight and picking up a win. King threw seven inning where he gave up three hits, struck out nine and notched a save.
