SAN MARCOS, Calif. — In its second matchup against a ranked team, No. 2 California Baptist University's comeback attempt came up just short with an 82-74 loss to No. 17-ranked UC San Diego Saturday night.
The Lancers drop to 3-2 on the young year, while the Tritons improve to 2-0.
Kamille Diaz led all scorers with 27 points – just three off her career high – on 11-for-16 shooting. Courtney Nelson followed with 17 points, while Cassidy Mihalko chipped in 10 points (4-for-8). Diaz and Mihalko each finished with three steals, with Diaz and Erin Asher each dishing out three assists.
CBU got off to a slow start and found itself trailing 28-13 after the first quarter. The Lancers bounced back by winning the second frame, 19-16, but it still gave CBU a lot of work to do to overcome a 12-point deficit coming out of halftime, 44-32.
With two and a half minutes before the break and down by 16, 44-28, Tori Mitchell finished two chances at the line and Diaz made an easy layup off a Mihalko steal to close out the half.
In the third, CBU went off on an 8-0 spurt to cut the margin down to two possessions. Diaz started it off by knocking down a shot from the perimeter, before she stole the ball back and Mihalko banked in a shot off the glass. Diaz capped the scoring with a three-pointer to put CBU within 48-42.
The Tritons built back their double-digit lead, but Mitchell posted up under the basket just before the period ended to give CBU momentum heading into the final quarter down 58-50.
Nelson found a lane and drove to the basket in the opening seconds of the fourth, but the Lancers couldn't get the stops they needed to shift momentum in their favor.
Diaz found nothing-but-net from deep to put CBU within six, 80-74, with 24 seconds left to play, but UCSD finished its free throws in the remaining ticks to take the game 82-74.
The Lancers will look to bounce back in their home opener on Thursday as they host Cal State San Bernardino at 7:00 p.m.
