AZUSA, Calif. – Impressive performances from Lauren Hackett and Tori Ortman highlighted California Baptist University's final regular-season match against PacWest rival Azusa Pacific on Saturday.
Hackett recorded a double-double of 19 kills and 10 digs and Ortman posted a match-high 21 digs in just three sets of the Lancers' 25-21, 26-24, 25-20 loss to the Cougars. CBU enters the postseason with a 20-8, 15-5 in-conference record and APU's year likely comes to an end, with it holding a 16-13, 12-8 mark.
The fifth-ranked Lancers in the NCAA Division II West Region will wait to see where they are headed and seeded for the West regional rounds of the playoffs during the NCAA's live selection show on Monday at 4:30 p.m. PDT.
Despite the loss, CBU posted a 6-1 advantage in aces and also enjoyed the edge in digs (61-60) and assists (43-41) on Saturday. Sydney Kralj also picked up a double-double of 32 assists and 10 digs for CBU, while Hackett added five blocks and an ace to her stat line and Abbie Gortsema finished with five blocks, three kills and two digs.
Azusa Pacific took a 16-13 lead in the first set, but the Lancers came back to take a 21-20 lead. Gortsema and Hackett led CBU back in the game on a 4-0 run to give their team a 17-16 edge. A kill and ace from Hackett kept CBU in front, 21-20, but APU rattled off the final five points to take the win.
In set two, the Lancers came back from behind again and used a 5-1 charge, on three Hackett points, to take a 22-20 lead. The Cougars closed out strong again, with a 6-2 run giving them an overtime win, 26-24.
Another 4-0 run sparked by a Natalie Zimmerer kill, Gortsema block and Kristin McCord ace put CBU up again late, 19-18. Azusa Pacific secured its Senior Day win, though, with a 7-1 run down the stretch.
