CBU Heats Up in Arizona

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – After challenging itself with an NCAA Division I opponents in its first two events of the year, California Baptist University witnessed the benefits this weekend at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the form of a 31-10 dual win over the Eagles and impressive showing at the Mile High Open.
Nick Fiegener, a 184-pounder, went 3-0 on the week, getting a dual victory and two wins in the Mile High Open to improve to 5-0 on the season. Jacob Waste (197), Nolan Kistler (174) and Trent Smith (133) also went 2-0 this weekend. CBU picked up its first dual win of the year to improve to 1-2, while ERAU slides to 1-1.
In dual action, CBU won seven of the final eight matches to secure the lopsided victory. Bradley Christensen (165), Nolan Kistler, Fiegener, Jacob Waste and Paul Head (heavyweight) won five-straight bouts to give the Lancers a nearly insurmountable 21-7 lead.
Trent Smith and Anthony Racobaldo (141) won the final two matches of the dual to deliver the 31-10 victory.
There were six bonus-point victories in that long run, with Nolan Kistler (14-3), Head (14-5) and Racobaldo (17-5) logging major-decision wins; Fiegener (15-0) and Waste (16-1) picking up technical falls; and Smith pinning his opponent at the 5:56 mark.
On Saturday in the Mile High Open, Fiegener won both of his matches with pins. Both came in at 1:01 or faster.
Waste, Bryce Benlian (197), Mario Barrios, Nolan Kistler, Austin Kleint (174), Christian Smith (174) and Trent Smith all won their only Mile High Open matches.
Racobaldo took second in the 141-pound bracket. He defeated two Embry-Riddle opponents, pinning Tyler Tate at the 6:43 mark of the quarterfinal match and then logging a 4-3 decision over Cameron Huizar in the semifinals. Racobaldo took second place in his weight class after dropping a 16-4 major to ERAU's Cary Palmer.
Kurtis Becker (157) defeated Embry-Riddle's Carlos Apodaca by 11-2 major decision to secure third place at 157 pounds. He advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-2 win over Apodaca in his first match Saturday.
Kyle Takahama (141) took fifth place at 141 with a forfeit victory over Tate in the deciding match. Jake Ceja (149) went 1-1 on the day, as well, for CBU.
The Lancers take a week off of competition over Thanksgiving and then take on the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas Dec. 2-3. It will serve as yet another challenge for CBU against a host of Division I opponents.
