RIVERSIDE, Calif. – With seven matches left in the regular season, California Baptist University finds itself in the playoff picture with the release of the first NCAA Division II West Regional rankings on Wednesday afternoon.
Tops among PacWest schools, the Lancers rank fifth in the West Region, with two-plus weeks left in their regular season. At 16-5, 11-2 in the conference, CBU sits second in the PacWest standings. The final regional rankings will be revealed during a live selection show on Nov. 21st at 4:30 p.m. PDT.
Alaska Anchorage is the early favorite to host the D-II West Region Tournament for the second year in a row after opening at the No. 1 spot in the region. Cal State San Bernardino and Western Washington rank second and third, respectively, followed by Simon Fraser at No. 4.
After CBU, Northwest Nazarene, Cal State Los Angeles, Central Washington, Chico State and Dixie State rank sixth to 10th. The top-eight teams in the region advance to the postseason, with the regional rounds taking place Dec. 1-3 or 2-4 at a host site yet to be determined.
CBU can secure its ticket to its first NCAA playoffs by winning its conference championship or placing highest among playoff-eligible teams, which it currently does. The only team in front of the Lancers is Concordia (21-2, 12-2). The Eagles are currently in the middle of their transition to full NCAA membership and thus ineligible for playoff competition. Dominican ranks third in the conference at 15-7, 11-3.
CBU will defend its ranking and look to stay in the mix for a playoff spot in two home matches this week. Academy of Art visits Thursday at 7 p.m. and Concordia travels to the Van Dyne Gym Saturday at 2 p.m. The Lancers will face one more team in these regional rankings when Dixie State comes to Riverside on Nov. 11th for an 8 p.m. match.
