RIVERSIDE, Calif. — In its final home game of the season, California Baptist University knew it had to take care of business to keep its playoff dreams alive. The Lancers did just that with a 5-1 defeat over Academy of Art Thursday afternoon.
CBU – which ranks fifth in the West Region – improves to 12-5 on the year, 8-4 in the PacWest, with the result. The Urban Knights drop to 2-14-1 overall, 2-10-0 in conference.
"Today we challenged the guys to put the game away early and we did that," said Coach Coe Michaelson. "It was nice to see everyone contribute. Now we are excited for a big game Saturday at Dixie State."
Sixteen minutes into the contest, CBU drew a foul about 30 yards out. Sebastian Wiesboeck and Hugo Gutierrez each laid off the ball, allowing Wyatt Deane to fire a rocket of a shot into the far left netting to put the Lancers up 1-0 early.
Matthew Bernard and Caley Powers brought some fresh legs into the match with 15 minutes left before halftime and fully took advantage of it. Powers set Bernard up for a goal in the 36th minute before Powers tucked away a Cobi Hunt assist in the 43rd minute.
"Matt and Caley were key off the bench today coming up with those goals in the last 15 minutes of the first half," said Michaelson. "I was pleased that we were so much better today at taking our chances."
Up 3-0 at halftime, CBU didn't want to take its foot off the gas in the second half and made it 4-0 in the 50th minute. Aidan Apodaca sent a cross into the box and Powers drilled it past the Urban Knight goalkeeper to extend the Lancers' cushion.
Less than 10 minutes later, CBU struck again. Luca Tschaidse drew a foul in the 18-yard box for a penalty kick and then converted the chance with ease to make it 5-0.
Art U put a little damper on the day in the 65th minute, drawing a PK of its own and tucking it away to cap the scoring at 5-1.
The Lancers head to St. George, Utah, tomorrow for their Saturday 3:30 p.m. PDT kickoff against Dixie State. The Trailblazers are currently undefeated in conference and rank just in front of CBU in the West Region, sitting at No. 5.
