RIVERSIDE, Calif. — With everything riding on its final two games of the regular season, California Baptist University came into Thursday's matchup with Academy of Art ready to get down to business. The Lancers grabbed a 2-0 win over the Urban Knights to stay in hunt for the PacWest Championship.
CBU improves to 10-4-3 overall, 9-1-2 in the PacWest, and extends its winning streak to seven-straight games. ART U drops to 1-15-1 on the year, 1-10-1 in conference.
Only six minutes and six seconds into the game, CBU capitalized. Miranda Hald scored her second goal of her collegiate debut by beating two defenders and firing off a shot from distance.
It was all CBU from there as the Lancers racked up 22 shots in the first half alone, including nine that were on goal.
Dominating the Knights, it was only a matter of time before the Lancers struck again. It came in the 23rd minute as Desarae Felix took on three ART U defenders and slipped her fifth goal of the season past the Knight goalkeeper.
Despite the lopsided shots in the first half, it was a different story in the second period as ART U started to put some pressure on the CBU defense.
In the 53rd minute, the Knights got their best look of the day but hit the crossbar instead of finding the back of the net.
Chaylin Couzens looked like she might put the final dagger in the game in the 85th minute, but the ART U goalkeeper made the save to seal the 2-0 result.
The Lancers currently sit tied for first in the conference with rival Azusa Pacific, with the title coming down to how the two teams fare on Saturday. CBU secures its third PacWest title with a win at Dixie State and an APU loss or tie. If the Cougars win, they would get the championship due to the goal differential clause in the tiebreaker.
CBU and the Trailblazers kick off in St. George, Utah, on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. PDT.
