RIVERSIDE, Calif. – For the second time in a row, California Baptist University's Nick Fiegener was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday. It was impossible to go in any other direction after Fiegener placed seventh at the Cliff Keen Invitational on Saturday.
Fiegener became the third Lancer and second in as many years to place at the prestigious event, and is the only non-heavyweight from CBU to ever do so. CBU is ranked 13th in the NWCA Coaches D-II poll and took 27th as a team at Cliff Keen.
After winning his first six matches of the year, including one in the tournament, Fiegener went 5-2 last week at Cliff Keen to improve to 10-2. Both of the 184-pounder's losses came against top-15 ranked opponents in Division I, including two-time reigning NCAA champion and top-ranked 184 Gabe Dean of Cornell and No. 15 Steven Schneider of Binghamton.
Fiegener, a redshirt sophomore transfer from Cal Poly, rolled through the rest of his competition, defeating all five opponents by at least seven points, with four bonus-point victories. He started with a 12-0 major of Arizona State's Connor Small, teched Minnesota's Bobby Steveson (16-1) and added a 12-5 decision over Bucknell's Garrett Hoffman.
The 184-pounder majored Army's Samson Imonode on a 12-1 score to secure seventh place and guaranteed himself a top-eight spot with a pin of Utah Valley's Will Sumner at the 6:27 mark earlier on Saturday.
