CBU Blazes Through Dixie State

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — When it comes to Van Dyne Gym, California Baptist University has been able to defend it well over the years and picked up its 20th-straight home victory Thursday night. The No. 10-ranked Lancers dominated a depleted Dixie State squad to post a 104-56 win and remain undefeated in conference.
CBU improves to 10-2 overall, 3-0 in the PacWest, and extends its unbeaten streak to seven-straight games. The Trailblazers leave Riverside still looking for their first win of the season, sitting 0-8 on the year, 0-2 in conference.
As a team, the Lancers moved the ball around extremely well, finishing with 30 assists. They also forced 31 turnovers – while only committing 13 themselves – and scored 42 points off those turnovers.
Kamille Diaz finished with a double-double, but not in the most common sense. The senior guard posted 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting and dished out a season-high 10 assists, just two off her career high.
Courtney Nelson led the Lancers with 22 points (9-for-14), while Cassidy Mihalko finished the night with 17 points (7-for-12). Emma Meriggioli rounded out the foursome in double figures with 15 points (6-for-8), while also dishing out five assists – one off her career high.
DSU may have scored the first points of the night, but the lead didn't last long. CBU went on an 11-0 run before the Trailblazers could stop the bleeding. Mihalko sparked the spurt by draining a three-pointer off a Diaz assist and Meriggioli capped the run with a triple of her own.
Despite managing to tie the game at 17-17 and 22-22, the Trailblazers only had eight players to work with and the Lancers' quick style of play quickly wore on the visitors.
Diaz got another scoring spree going just 20 seconds into the second, rattling in a three from range. Nelson and Mihalko each got in on the action to put the Lancers up 30-22.
The Trailbalzers tried to contain the Lancers, but the home team wasn't willing to slow down. With a 34-26 lead, CBU closed out the second quarter by outscoring DSU 20-2 to walk into halftime with a 54-28 cushion.
It only escalated from there as CBU extended its lead into the 30-point range, off a three from Diaz, and even threatened a 40-point advantage halfway through the third. Diaz stole the ball away and found Mihalko on the fastbreak to give the Lancers a 74-36 lead.
The Lancers turned their lead into a 40-point upper hand less than a minute into the fourth. After the Trailblazers turned the ball over once again, Erin Asher drained a shot from the corner pocket, 84-43.
CBU even had a chance to push its lead over into 50-point territory, but time ran out as it took the 48-point win, 104-56.
The Lancers turn right around to host Cal State East Bay on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. for some nonconference action. CBU gets back to PacWest play next week when Fresno Pacific comes to town on Dec. 17 at 5:00 p.m.
