RIVERSIDE, Calif. — It may have been a low-scoring game Saturday night, but fourth-ranked California Baptist University made its points count, while locking down on defense. The Lancers grabbed a 63-45 win over Notre Dame de Namur to keep their first-place standing in conference.
CBU improves to 19-1 on the year, 11-1 in the PacWest to remain tied for the top spot with Hawai'i Pacific. The win also extends the Lancers' unbeaten streak to 11-straight games – just five off the program-best set in 2013-14, also under Coach Rick Croy. The Argonauts drop to 4-14 overall, 2-10 in conference.
Kalidou Diouf led the Lancers with 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Defensively, the big man blocked two shots and grabbed a team-high six missed shots off the glass.
Michael Smith followed with 15 points (5-for-13), while dishing out six assists, and also snatched up six rebounds. Marquise Mosley rounded out the trio in double figures with 12 points (4-for-8) and stole the ball twice from the Argonauts.
The Lancers jumped out to their customary double-digit lead early as two freshmen slammed in dunks on back-to-back CBU possessions. De'jon Davis powered in the first dunk and Bul Kuol followed with one of his own – dunking over his defender – to put his team in front 15-4.
NDNU managed to chip away at the lead to pull within eight at the break, however, putting the teams into the locker room with a 29-21 score in favor of the Lancers.
The Argonauts carried momentum over into the second half, putting the margin to just five points, 31-26, two minutes into the period.
Smith stopped the visitors from grabbing too much momentum, draining a three off a Casey Norris assist. Diouf followed by finding a lane to drive to the basket. Kuol kept the 8-0 run going, rattling in a triple from the corner to put his team up 39-26.
That soon turned into almost a 20-point lead as Mosley knocked down a shot from beyond the arc and Mason Stuteville followed with an old-fashioned, three-point play, 45-28.
Heading down the stretch with a 49-38 lead, CBU just needed to close out the final five minutes strong to secure its 11th-straight win. The Lancers did just that as they grabbed the 63-45 victory.
CBU continues at home for three more games, hosting Hawai'i Hilo on Monday, Hawai'i Pacific on Thursday – which will be broadcast live on Fox Sports West – and BYU-Hawaii on Saturday. All three games tip off at 7:00 p.m.
