RIVERSIDE, Calif. — No. 24-ranked California Baptist University had its first opportunity to defend its house this weekend, with two games in the CBU Mini Invite.
The Lancers opened the day by facing sixth-ranked UC Irvine – the fourth ranked team CBU has faced in five games. Despite a valiant effort, the Lancers dropped the game 20-4. CBU responded to the loss later in the day, however, with a win against Concordia University of Irvine, beating the Eagles 13-6.
Madison Gonzales provided the offensive spark for CBU by scoring the first Lancer goal of the day in the second period of the opener. Abi Auer, Valerie Spezzaferri and Katie Quon followed suit, each finding the back of the cage.
In the nightcap, Paizlee Dreyer and Auer led the charge, with each scoring a hat trick against the Eagles.
"After the UCI game, we talked as a team and decided we needed to protect our house. We wanted to focus on getting down, setting up, and getting goals early," said Dreyer.
The Lancers did just that, scoring four goals in the first period. Auer scored the first within the first 35 seconds of the game. Gonzales continued the early-scoring trend, putting one in the cage less than a minute after Auer's. Annie Eubanks kept the run going to give the Lancers an early 3-0 lead, before CUI responded with a goal to end the first period 3-1.
CBU fired back with another goal from Gonzales just 20 seconds into the second. Dreyer added to the lead with her first of three goals in the game. The Lancers continued on a 5-1 run, with goals from Auer, Jaclyn Meyers and Spezzaferri to end the first half with CBU holding a 7-2 cushion.
The second half would prove to be much like the first, with the Lancers scoring goals early.
CBU increased its lead to 8-2 with a quick goal from Spezzaferri. CUI answered with a goal, but a five-meter penalty shot from Spezzaferri left the Eagles with little hope. Dreyer completed her hat trick in the third period, while Auer and Eubanks also got in on the scoring action.
Freshman Grace Ramirez entered the game in the fourth period to finish Lina Medeiro's defensive work in the cage. Medeiros posted four saves and four steals on the night to secure the win and lead the Lancer defense.
"Tonight we came out and played a lot better team defense than we did this morning," said Coach Jon Miller. "This morning we had two steals as a team, but we came together tonight and had 15, which is a big difference."
The offense seemed to feed off the defensive efforts, with Auer and Eubanks each scoring again in the fourth on even strength. CUI scored in the end of the fourth, but it wasn't enough to stop the Lancers, who took the win, 13-6.
CBU hits the road next weekend at the Whittier Open, facing tournament host Whittier College at noon and Pomona-Pitzer at 4:30 p.m.
