RIVERSIDE, Calif. – History is being chased by California Baptist University again this season, and they set another program best for All-Western Water Polo Association awards on Wednesday.
Five Lancers earned the distinction. Jonny Lotero picked up a first-team nod, Tanner Shore got second-team recognition, while Dominick Nevarez and Gabe Thorne received honorable mention and Joseph Galgani reaped All-Freshman honors. It is the first time five Lancers have notched All-WWPA accolades in a single season, with four being the high and standard the previous four years.
News of the awards come two days before the first sprint of the Western Water Polo Association Championships. CBU played its way to the third seed, which is another program best, for the conference tournament. The 17th-ranked Lancers in NCAA (Divisions I-III) bring in a 20-12, 4-3 conference record into the WWPA opener with sixth-seeded Loyola Marymount (6-19, 2-5) on Friday at 4 p.m.
Lotero was essentially voted the top two-meter in the WWPA this season as the only center on the conference's first team. The senior leads the conference in goals with 80 -- on a .580 percentage (80-138) -- and points with 93 on 13 assists. He has also drawn 56 ejections and forced 17 steals.
Those 80 goals are tied for the most goals in a single season in CBU's NCAA era (2013-17). The second leading goal scorer in the WWPA is UC Davis' Ido Goldschmidt, with 54. Overall, Lotero has 16 hat tricks this season and has scored a season-high five goals in five games.
Shore is just the third Lancer to earn three All-WWPA honors in his career, as the junior became a second-teamer in consecutive years after making the All-Freshman Team in 2015. The utility is one of the top defenders in the conference and leads the WWPA in steals by six, with 59.
The Corona native also ranks second on CBU's roster with 86 points, with 47 goals and 39 assists, and has come through in the clutch with four game-winning goals this season. He has scored on .534 percent of his shots (47-88), forced nine field blocks and is also the team's primary sprinter.
Nevarez ranks second on the team and third in the conference with 53 goals and 87 points, which includes 34 assists. The sophomore also has 20 steals and 12 drawn ejections to his name.
Thorne, a redshirt freshman, has stood out while splitting time in the cage. The goalie boasts a .546 save percentage, with 221 saves in all, and 10-4 record in 21 games and nine starts. He has 12 games with 10 or more saves and boasts a season-high of 18 with two other contests with 17 saves.
Galgani continues CBU's four-year streak of having an All-Freshman Team member in the WWPA. He has accounted for 46 points on 27 goals and 19 assists, while logging 23 steals and drawn 13 ejections.
