BELMONT, Calif. — No. 5-ranked California Baptist University closed out its second trip to the Bay Area with a 67-62 win over Notre Dame de Namur Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers improve to 24-2 overall with their fourth-straight win, sitting 16-2 in conference. It moves CBU back even with Hawai'i Pacific for first place in the PacWest standings with two games left in the regular season. The Argonauts drop to 4-20 on the year, 2-16 in the PacWest.
Four Lancers finished with double figures, led by Kalidou Diouf. The junior big man posted 24 points (12-for-22) and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Jason Todd followed with 12 points (4-for-7), while Casey Norris (4-for-7) and Jordan Heading each chipped in 10 points.
CBU out-rebounded NDNU 36-to-27, with Todd and Heading each contributing six boards.
The Lancers had to overcome some adversity in the first half after finding themselves trailing by eight points, 22-14, with just under nine minutes before halftime.
Diouf sparked an 8-0 run for CBU to tie the game, 22-22, with back-to-back three-pointers from Norris and Todd helping fuel the spurt. The Lancers used that momentum to hold a 33-30 advantage over the Argonauts at the break.
NDNU tried to take back control of the game and kept it close until the Lancers started to get separation with about 15 minutes left on the clock. After the Argonauts cut within one, 42-41, Todd and Jordan Heading knocked down consecutive triples to put CBU up 48-41.
The Argos managed to even things up at 54-54, but the Lancers went off on another scoring spree to jump back in front by seven with five and a half minutes remaining. De'jon Davis completed an and-one opportunity and Todd followed with a nothing-but-net shot from the perimeter to give CBU the 61-54 cushion.
Heading down the stretch with the multi-possession lead, CBU just needed to finish strong to secure the win.
NDNU didn't make it easy, cutting the Lancers' margin down to just one point.
With time running out, CBU slowed down the pace on offense, while getting key defensive stops. The Argonauts had no choice but to try to foul to get the ball back, but Norris and Heading finished chances at the charity stripe to seal the 67-62 victory for the Lancers.
CBU has two games left in the regular season, heading to Concordia on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. tip off. The Lancers then host Point Loma next Saturday for the Last Time in Van Dyne, tipping off at 8:00 p.m. on Fox Sports Prime Ticket.
