CORONA, Calif. – A remarkable comeback led California Baptist University to a playoff-hole victory at its host tournament last season, but the 10th-ranked Lancers looked to make their path to a repeat less dramatic in Monday's first round of the CBU Invitational.
Despite some challenging, muddy conditions, CBU jumped out to a 12-stroke lead, with a 298 first-round tally, at its Invite hosted at the Eagle Glen Golf Club. Sonoma State and Simon Fraser – the No. 29 and 21 teams in NCAA Division II, respectively – trail the Lancers in second and third, with at 310 and 311.
Concordia University of Oregon (316) follows in fourth, while No. 18 Cal State San Marcos and No. 14 Academy of Art are tied for fifth, with 317s. In seventh, 30th-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay (319), Cal State East Bay (323), Embry Riddle (324) and Northwest Nazarene (327) round out the top 10.
Seniors Natalie Park and Marvi Monsalve lead the 100-player field, with each tied for the individual lead at one-under-par 71 for CBU. Park birdied five times at holes two, six, seven, 12 and 13, while Monsalve birdied three times.
Monsalve averaged a tournament-low 3.80 on Monday's par-four holes. Park's five birdies were the second most in the first round, while she played par three and four holes even par and par five at 4.75 for the third-lowest mark on the day. Meanwhile, Monsalve's 13 pars and three birdies ranked second and sixth.
Sterling Hawkins of Academy of Art trails Park and Monsalve by one stroke, sitting in third place, with a 72.
Meanwhile, Laura Scrivner recorded 13 pars put herself in seventh place individually, with a three-over 75 that included birdies at holes two and four and a two-over stretch on the back nine. Erica Wang finished strong, playing her final six holes at even par, to score for the Lancers with an 81, with 12 pars. Martin shot 4.75 on par fives to tie with Park for the third-lowest mark.
Despite their scores not counting toward the team total, the Lancers received big performances from their individual competitors. Most notably, sophomore Sharon Oh carded a 76, with two birdies, while Jordan Martin and Evelyn Nguyen each shot 82 in individual action.
