RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Heading into the NCAA Division II postseason, California Baptist University's hopes are higher than ever both individually and as a team. It makes sense after the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference released its all-conference teams on Wednesday, with five Lancers making the cut.
For the second year in a row, the 13th-ranked Lancers reaped the RMAC Wrestler of the Year in senior 197-pounder Jacob Waste – Joe Fagiano claimed the honor in 2016. Freshman 149 Daxton Gordon and sophomore 184 Nick Fiegener both collected first-team honors in the RMAC, while Peter Cunningham (141) and heavyweight Paul Head notched second-team selection.
Waste was also voted the RMAC Championship Wrestler of the Meet on Feb. 4th when he won his third-straight conference title. Headed into the D-II Super Region IV Championships, Waste is favored to not only win his third regional title but his first national title, as the top-ranked 197 in all of Division II. Overall, he boasts a 24-3 record, with 10 technical falls and five pins this season. Waste has won 17-straight matches coming into the postseason and is undefeated against D-II opponents this year.
At 28-2, Fiegener is also undefeated against D-II competition, with both of his losses coming to top-15 ranked Division I wrestlers. The 184-pound RMAC champion goes into Regionals on an 18-match win streak and ranked second in his weight class. Twenty-two of his wins have been for bonus points, with 11 technical falls, six pins and five major decisions on his record this year.
Gordon has not dropped a match since Jan. 5th, with his 13-match winning streak giving him a 15-3 record and the 149 RMAC title. The redshirt freshman has won 12 of his matches by decision.
Cunningham and Head both finished runner-up in their weight classes at the RMAC Championships. Overall, Cunningham has won seven of his last eight matches to improve to 15-5 this season and 15-3 at 141, with 12 bonus-point wins, while Head is 22-9 as a senior.
CBU will look to build on its runner-up finish at the 2016 Super IV Regional this week at Colorado School of Mines on Friday and Saturday. The Lancers have never finished outside of the top seven in the region, also taking second in 2014.
