RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Cassidy Mihalko's historic senior season added another accolade on Wednesday when the California Baptist University guard secured the 2016-17 CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year award.
Mihalko is the first Lancer to earn the top Academic All-America award from CoSIDA after she made the first team last season. The business administration major continued her impressive performances both on the court and in the classroom to not only repeat on the first team but hit a new level.
The 2016-17 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II Women's Basketball teams include the student-athletes across the United States and Canada and recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution.
Of the six first-team Academic All-America selections, Mihalko was the only one who earned the honor two years running. Mihalko made history with her play in 2016-17. She became the third Lancer to score 2,000 points in her career earlier, and at 2,097 all-time points she ranks second in that statistic in CBU history.
Heading into postseason, Mihalko averages 20 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.3 assists a game. She led the PacWest in field-goal (56) and free-throw percentages (85.6), ranking 16th and 32nd in all of Division II in those categories, as well, while ranking 13th in the division in points per game.
The third-ranked Lancers in Division II clinched the PacWest regular-season championship outright and set a record for conference wins on a 20-0 run. CBU ends the regular season on a 26-game winning streak (33 straight at home) and with a 29-2 overall record.
Postseason play begins this week, as the Lancers earned a first-round bye in the PacWest Tournament. They will face the winner of Thursday's fourth and fifth-seed game between Notre Dame de Namur and Azusa Pacific, respectively, on Friday at 5 p.m.
