DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Before even hitting the stage at the Bandshell in Daytona Beach, Fla., California Baptist University had already made program history by qualifying two stunt teams for the championship finals. The Lancers made even more history Saturday morning with one group taking home the trophy and the other placing third out of 11 teams.
"We have never placed higher than eighth in group stunt at nationals, so our goal this year was top five," said Coach Tami Fleming. "These girls executed a perfect routine with zero deductions and excellent execution, taking them all the way to the top. It is truly an honor to sit amongst the best of the best, knowing that we were able to compete with (and beat) Division I schools from all over the country. I am immensely proud."
Taylor Contratto, Taylor Frasca, Dazmyn Dull and Evynn Richard took first with a score of 54.60, beating out NCAA Division I Louisville's top stunt team (54.47 points). Raylene Sadorra, Morgan Willis, Alexis Humphrey and Breanna Krombs followed in third place with 53.13 total points, tying another Division I team from Oklahoma State, also with 53.13 points.
Each stunt group had 45 seconds to perform straight stunts and both Lancer teams hit their routines without a drop. It was the second year in a row that the Lancers' stunt teams put together zero-deduction routines, with last year's group taking eighth overall.
It caps off a very successful weekend where CBU won its fifth-straight All-Girl Division II Championship the day before.
