DAYTONA BEACH, Calif. — When it comes to the cheerleading world, California Baptist University is a well-known name. It's no wonder really, the Lancers haven't lost since 2013 and were going for their fifth-straight National Cheerleaders Association Championship Friday afternoon.
After a solid prelim performance, where CBU grabbed a perfect score in its Game Day performance, the Lancers took the stage at the Daytona Beach Bandshell last and definitely saved the best for last. CBU hit a flawless routine to score 95.50 points and win its fifth-straight Division II All-Girls crown.
"It was a great day to be a Lancer!" said Coach Tami Fleming. "We are proud to be bringing home another national championship to CBU. Five feels pretty great!"
Oklahoma Baptist took second with a score of 93.98, while Grand Valley State came in third with 92.50 points.
Last year, the Lancers took the title, but it was a close finish after they had a few deductions taken from their final routine. Not this year, though, CBU didn't drop a single stunt and the Bandshell could feel the electricity coming off the stage as the Lancers finished the dance part of their routine in style.
"This team is amazing and they earned the right to be confident today going into finals," said Fleming. "They nailed a zero-deduction routine with finesse and this is the hardest routine CBU has ever attempted."
Eight Lancers aren't done competing with the stunt group competition taking place Saturday morning. For the first time in program history, CBU qualified two teams and will look to build on last year's eighth-place finish. Taylor Contratto, Taylor Frasca, Dazmyn Dull and Evynn Richard will team up as one of the Lancer teams after taking sixth in the qualifying round, while Raylene Sadorra, Morgan Willis, Alexis Humphrey and Breanna Krombs combine for the other CBU squad, which took seventh.
