RIVERSIDE, Calif. – It was hard to choose an individual, but there was no team more deserving of the PacWest Defender of the Week award than California Baptist University on Monday. The Lancers put together one of the most impressive defensive displays in the conference this season against Biola on Saturday, and Blaysen Varnadoe was honored as the conference's defender of the week Monday.
Varnadoe averaged 20 points and 9.5 rebounds on 50-percent shooting (14-28) in 24 minutes a game last week in two CBU wins over Academy of Art and Biola. The junior transfer also shot 62 percent from three (5-8), 7-7 from the free-throw line and had five assists, four blocks and two steals.
As a team, the Lancers held Biola to the lowest-point total allowed in CBU's NCAA era (2014-18) in the 80-35 win, holding the Eagles to 19-percent from the field (12-63) and 13 from three (3-23).
Monday marked the second week in a row CBU earned a weekly PacWest award after Georgia Dale was the Freshman of the Week on Feb. 5th. It was the fourth weekly award for the Lancers, albeit the first Defender of the Week honor this year.
Varnadoe logged 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists, a block and steal versus Biola on Saturday. Earlier in the week, she scored 26, pulled down 10 rebounds and posted three blocks, a steal and assist versus Academy of Art on Monday.
The Lancers have proven to be a top defensive team not only in the PacWest but NCAA Division II. They are the top defensive rebounding team in D-II and are 18th with 44.09 rebounds a game and also have the 36th-best defense in Division II in terms of field goal percentage defense, holding teams to 36.1 this year.
CBU gets to play at home again on Tuesday when it hosts Hawaii Hilo at 5 p.m. The Lancers then host their Senior Day, as they play their final home game of the regular season, on Thursday at 5 p.m. versus Chaminade.
