COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — For the third year in a row, No. 9-ranked California Baptist University saw three grapplers win individual Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. It led to the Lancers grabbing their second RMAC team title in their last chance to do so.
CBU finished with 132.5 team points, beating out Colorado State-Pueblo was close behind in second with 110 points, while San Francisco State took third (104.5).
Daxton Gordon, Nolan Kistler and Garrett Strang each won their respective weight classes, with Kistler being named the Wrestler of the Meet. The rest of CBU's grapplers finished in second or third place.
Kistler – who ranks second in NCAA Division II at 174 – entered the tournament with a ton of momentum, going on a five-bout streak without giving up a single point. He kept up his dominant performance, opening with a 17-0 technical fall in the first period and following with another shutout technical fall, 15-0, in the semifinal.
In the championship bout, Kistler faced a little more competition, but grabbed a 10-4 decision to win his second RMAC Championship – his first at 174 after winning the 165 bracket in 2016.
Gordon started the day with a bye, but pinned his first opponent in five minutes, 22 seconds. It put him into the semifinals, where he grabbed a 6-2 decision to compete for the individual crown. Unfortunately for Jacob DeSersa from UCCS, an injury kept him from competing in the championship bout to hand Gordon the title.
Strang started his journey to the title with a 9-2 decision and followed with a 7-4 battle in the semifinal. He capped the day off with a 7-3 decision in the championship bout to win his first individual title.
Alex Nunez took second in the 125-pound weight class after opening with a first-round bye. He faced Brandon Vu from SF State next, the third time the two have faced each other this year. Nunez won the bout 5-1 to take the series 2-1 and advance to the semifinal round. He grabbed a 21-5 technical fall in under five minutes, but lost 8-2 in the championship to finish in second.
Third-ranked Nick Fiegener also picked up a second-place finish in the 184-pound bracket. After a first-round bye, Fiegener pinned his first opponent in just 12 seconds. He followed with a 16-0 shutout technical fall, but just lost in the finale 3-1 in overtime.
Christian Smith, the fourth-ranked wrestler at 165, also took second place. He opened with a bye and followed with a high-scoring 15-10 decision victory to advance to the final.
Andrew Schulte (141), Slater Johnson (157) and Zach Schrader (heavyweight) each took third in their weight classes.
Schulte lost his opening matchup, but responded in a big way with an 18-3 technical fall. He kept things going with a 13-4 major decision and a 3-1 decision to put himself in the third-place round. Schulte won that in a high-octave decision, beating Colorado Mesa's William Moss 18-13.
Johnson had a first-round bye, but grabbed a tech fall shutout, 18-0, to advance to the quarters. He lost his next matchup, but responded with a pin in under four minutes to challenge for third place. Johnson won that bout 7-4 to take bronze.
Schrader also opened with a bye and followed with a 7-4 decision victory. He lost the quarterfinal but won his next matchup 4-2 and the third-place bout 5-2.
The Lancers return home to host NCAA Division I Bakersfield on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
