DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — For the first time ever, California Baptist University had a little more competition than usual and saw itself in second place after the preliminary round at the National Cheerleaders Association Championship Thursday.
It didn't matter, however, as the Lancers won their sixth-straight All-Girls Division II National Championship Friday after hitting a flawless routine at the Daytona Beach Bandshell.
CBU finished with a zero-deduction routine to grab a 96.07 score to beat out Davenport, which sat in first after prelims. The Panthers had a .25-point deduction, but even without it, couldn't have matched the Lancers' score, ending with a 95.38 final score. Oklahoma Baptist University took third with a score of 93.52.
The Lancers kept their undefeated streak alive, having not lost a competition since 2013. Next year, CBU moves to Division I where it will look to continue to find success. In the All-Girls Division I competition, only Louisville (Division IA) outperformed the Lancers with a score of 96.43.
Eight Lancers aren't done competing with the stunt group competition taking place Saturday morning. Last year, CBU won its first-ever stunt group championship after qualifying two teams for the first time in program history, with the other group taking third. Taylor Contratto, Jordan Arrington, Dazmyn Dull and Evynn Richard make up one stunt group, while Kacie Gonzales, Taylor Frasca, Alexis Humphrey and Breanna Krombs team up for the other group.
