CBU's Draft Streak Continues

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Justin Montgomery and Dylan Stowell both heard their names called during the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday, it extended California Baptist University's streak of having a player drafted to nine years.
Montgomery was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 17th round at No. 510 overall and Stowell was taken off the board in the 34th round at 1,024. A total of 33 Lancers have been drafted over the past 37 years, with 22 players taken during Coach Gary Adcock's 14-year tenure.
It also continued CBU's rich tradition of helping pitchers advance to the next level under Adcock, a former pitcher himself at UCLA. CBU was dubbed "Pitcher U" by a 2017 NCAA.com article for good reason, as it has had at least one pitcher taken in the MLB Draft over the last nine years, with a total of 13 in that span.
Montgomery, a 6-foot-5 right-handed pitcher, split time between the starting rotation and bullpen, with 14 appearances and eight starts, this year and logged a 3.35 earned-run average. He limited his opposition to a .189 batting average and struck out 64 batters in 48.1 innings.
Stowell earned NCAA Division II All-American honorable mention and was a three-time All-West Region selection this season. The redshirt senior solidified himself as the team's ace with a 6-2 record and 2.47 ERA over 14 appearances and 12 starts. He logged 95 strikeouts to 25 walks over 83.2 innings and maintained a 1.22 WHIP. Career numbers wise, he is one of the best to ever wear a Lancer uniform, especially in the NCAA era (2014-18). The right hander's career numbers are impressive with his 1.98 ERA ranking second and first among pitchers who spent more than one season at CBU. His 191 strikeouts and 15 wins are the ninth most in program history, while both rank second in the NCAA era.
They join a growing list of Lancers at the next level, with six well into their seasons.
Trevor Oaks became the first CBU player to make an MLB appearance and is still on the Kansas City Royals roster. Caleb Dirks and Adam Hofacket are both at the Triple-A level with the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, respectively. Sharif Othman is with the Miami Marlins' Double-A affiliate, while Tyson Miller is at the Class-A advanced tier with the Chicago Cubs and Garett King is in Class A with the Detroit Tigers.
