RIVERSIDE, Calif. — History was bound to be made Friday afternoon as California Baptist University kicked off its first year of NCAA Division I action, hosting Loyola University Maryland. The Lancers grabbed a late goal and held on for a 1-0 victory, their first win of the season and first in a new era.
"It's always nice to get the win, especially on such a historic day," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We were focused on our execution and it paid off. Very proud of the players. We have a special group and we were honored to be a part of the first DI game in CBU history."
CBU starts DI with a 1-0-0 record, while the Greyhounds open the year 0-1-0.
Miranda Hald provided the late-game heroics with a goal in the 84th minute of action. Ari Coronado drove a perfect corner kick into the box, allowing Erin Gallagher to challenge in the air and head it over to Elisa Soderholm, who flicked it on with her thigh and Hald tuck it away.
"Being the first DI match in history of CBU meant so much for our team," said Hald. "Everyone fought from the start of the whistle until the end with grit and determination. We were able to create a tremendous amount of opportunities. I'm so honored I was able to get the final touch on the ball to put the team on the board."
"Miranda's goal was clutch," said St. Clair. "She was just named a team captain and her leadership showed on the field. It was also nice seeing Elisa get the assist on her birthday! Miranda was very aware of where the goalkeeper was and where she had to put the ball. It was a very head's up play."
The Lancers had other chances to put the game away, including two rapid-fire shots in the first minute of action. Valerie Cortez fired off the first one just 30 seconds into the contest, forcing the Loyola goalkeeper to make the save. Hald then redirected the rebound on frame, but once again, the keeper got her hands on it before the Lancers' next shot was high.
Loyola had a dangerous chance in the 11th minute, knocking a shot off the crossbar. Less than two minutes later, Carissa Christensen had to make a save of her own to keep the scoreless tie going.
CBU started the second half in similar fashion as Lanai Navarro put a shot on goal just two minutes into the period. Ten minutes later, Soderholm made the goalkeeper do some more work with another shot on target.
After the Lancers found the back of the net in the 84th minute, Loyola turned the pressure on, desperate for an equalizer and got two shots on goal off before time expired, but Christensen held on for the 1-0 shutout.
CBU turns right around to host Antelope Valley on Sunday, kicking off at 3:00 p.m. back at the Lancer Soccer Field.
"We just want to keep focusing on what we can control each game," said St. Clair. "We'll enjoy the win tonight and get back to work tomorrow for Antelope Valley on Sunday."
