LAS VEGAS – It might be a new year and a new set of challenges for California Baptist University as it transitions to Division I, but the Lancers picked right where they left off at the National Cheerleaders Association/United Spirit Association Collegiate Cheer Camp this past week.
Each year, teams from all over the country, across all divisions, meet up in Las Vegas for the NCA/USA Collegiate Camp with hopes of accolades heading into the new season and a ticket to compete at the national championship in April. Last year, the Lancers swept the awards and they repeated the feat this year.
On the first night, CBU won the Spirit Award to get the week off on a good foot. The Lancers went on to win the Advanced All-Girl Rally Routine Competition and the All-Girl Advanced Crowdleading competition, advancing to Crowdleading Run Offs, which puts the top team in each division competing against each other for a Gold Paid Bid to NCA Nationals and a Full Paid Bid to USA Collegiate Championships. The Lancers were named Most Spirited and Most Collegiate, while winning the Crowdleading Run Off and earning a Gold Paid Bid to the NCA National Championship and a Full Paid Bid to the USA Collegiate Championship.
The Lancers earned themselves top marks, receiving a Superior rating in the preliminary Crowdleading evaluation, a Superior rating in the Rally Routine evaluation and a Superior rating in the final Crowleading evaluation.
CBU also was named Best All-Around out of 16 teams with 151 points. Weber State took second with 136 points, while fellow WAC member NM State took third with 88 points.
For the first time in program history, all Lancers who tried out for All-American status earned the distinction for a total of 19 All-Americans, a program record. Jordan Arrington, Ashley Brown, Taylor Bruce, Taylor Contratto, Vanessa Copeland, Jaeda Corletto, Madison Corsello, Kacie Gonzales, Julie Haas, Makenna Hindson, Ally Hollabaugh, Alexis Humphrey, Janae Magpale, Amy McGraw, Alexa Pawlowski, Taylor Perkins, Serena Roberts, Tiffany Scott, and Rebecca Wingen all grabbed the honors, including four-straight nods for Contratto and Humphrey.
Contratto also teamed up with Angelica Salceda, Brown and Roberts in an All-Girl group stunt competition and won the Top Gun Stunt honor.
CBU is a seven-time USA Champion and six-time NCA Champion after winning it the past seven and six consecutive years, respectively, at the Division II level. This year, the Lancers will move up to Division I, but they are off to a good start in hopes of getting seven in a row.
