WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL BEATS BIOLA IN FIVE
Box Score
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004) – In what was perhaps the biggest victory in the past five years for the California Baptist University women’s volleyball team, the #17 Lancers held on to defeat #10 Biola, 30-22, 30-25, 26-30, 24-30, 15-12, in a Golden State Athletic Conference contest at Van Dyne Gymnasium on Saturday night.
CBU (14-2 overall, 6-2 GSAC) ended an eight-match losing streak against Biola (12-5, 4-4). The Eagles reached the semifinals of the NAIA National Tournament last season.
“The last couple years, I wanted to beat Biola really bad,” said CBU Coach Ryan McGuyre, who previously coached at Biola and defeated his old team for the first time in five tries. “This year I tried to think about them as just another team in the conference. Maybe that’s why God didn’t allow us to beat them the past couple of years. I love how we started tonight. We started well and finished well, and that’s the most important thing.”
CBU was led by freshman outside hitter Yudelka Bonilla (Mao, Valverde, Dominican Republic), who had a match-high 22 kills to go with 19 digs. Junior outside hitter Yajaira Prado (Montecristi, Dominican Republic) had 18 kills and 15 digs. Junior outside hitter Natasha Evylnn (Corona, CA/Spanaway Lake HS/Orange Coast CC) posted 16 kills and hit .429.
The Eagles were led by senior outside hitter/setter Andrea Delsigne, who had 14 kills and 18 assists. Freshman opposite Brittany Wing had 12 kills and junior outside hitter Hannah Timboe added 11 kills and 15 digs.
Game one was all Lancers, as they hit .543 (21-2-35). Leading 19-16, they went on a 5-0 run on a pair of kills from both Evylnn and Prado. Prado had six kills in game one.
The Lancers led throughout game two, though they held just a 24-22 lead late in the game. CBU scored three of the next four points, two on kills by Bonilla, to go ahead 27-23. After a pair of Biola points, CBU scored the final three points of the game, including a kill and block by senior middle blocker Crystal Prehn (Huntington Beach, CA/La Serna HS/Irvine Valley CC).
The Eagles turned things around in game three. CBU actually outhit Biola, .095 to .000, but a number of setting mistakes cost the Lancers. Biola built a seven-point lead at 15-8, though the Lancers came back to tie it at 22-22. The Eagles scored the next two points on Lancer miscues, and went on to take game three.
Game four was also tied at 22-22. A kill by Delsigne and two Lancer attack errors gave Biola a three-point lead, however. CBU scored the next point, but Biola finished game four with five straight points, including back-to-back block assists by freshman opposite Brittany Wing and junior middle blocker Kristen Orem to end the game.
CBU’s hitting had fallen in each of games one through four, but the Lancers came back in a big way in game five, hitting .524 (11-0-21) compared to Biola’s .318 (10-3-22). Trailing 4-3, CBU scored three straight points on a kill by sophomore middle blocker Lindsey Siefken (Beaverton, OR/Westview HS) and two Biola attack errors. CBU’s lead grew to three points at 8-5. Biola pulled the score back to 9-8, but CBU scored the next two points to reestablish a three-point lead at 11-8. The two teams traded points the rest of the way, with CBU closing out the match on a kill by Bonilla.
CBU next hosts The Master’s on Tuesday (Oct. 5) at 7 p.m.
