- SWIM TEAMS PLACE SECOND AT NAIA MEET
LAWRENCE, Kansas (Saturday, March 8, 2003) – Three more individual national titles were won by California Baptist University swimmers on the final day of the NAIA Swimming & Diving Championships – as well as two CBU standouts earning NAIA Swimmer of the Year honors – but both the Lancer men’s and women’s teams had to settle for second place behind Simon Fraser in the team competitions.- The Lancers’ Felix Sutanto was named men’s NAIA Swimmer of the Year and Lyndsay Devaney was named the women’s NAIA co-Swimmer of the Year. Both athletes won their third individual title of the meet today (and Sutanto was also part of a relay win).
- The four-day meet was held at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center. The top three team scores for the men: Simon Fraser 574, CBU 542, Spring Hill 250. The top three team scores for the women: Simon Fraser 578, CBU 519, Cumberland 285.
- "Two runner-up finishes are still strong performances," CBU Coach Rick Rowland said. "The women made up a lot of ground this year. A lot of freshmen came in and improved our depth. But it’s going to be tough to say goodbye to 15 seniors who swam their last meet today. They were an outstanding group. They really put us on the map as a legitimate swimming and diving program."
- Sutanto, who swam in the past Olympics for his native Indonesia, set an NAIA record in winning the 200 back in 1:47.35. He previously won the 200 IM and 100 back and was part of the 800 free-winning relay team. It is the second straight year he has been named Swimmer of the Year.
- Devaney, who earlier won the 500 free and 400 IM, earned her hat trick by winning the 1650 free in an NAIA -record time of 17:09.98. She was also named co-Swimmer of the Meet in 2002.
- Matt Sprankle earned his first individual title of the meet by winning the 200 fly in 1:50.51. He was also part of the 800 free relay win. The Lancers also had several second-place finishes today: Shara Ford in the 200 back (her third second-place finish of the meet), Jessica Wild in the 100 free, and both the men’s and women’s 400 free relay teams (both of which set school records).
