The win completes an opening day sweep as the Lancers upended UC Santa Cruz, 9-6, in the morning. The Lancers improve to 17-12 with the sweep.
Mike Looy and Brandon Jung scored back-to-back goals to open the game to give the Lancers a quick 2-0 lead. That was the largest lead of the game for either team, although the Lancers never trailed in the game.
Kevin Callister scored twice, and his second goal was the only score in the third quarter and it gave the Lancers a 5-4 lead heading into the final quarter. Callister also scored with 2:44 left in the game to give the Lancers a seemingly comfortable 6-4 lead. But Santa Clara came right back and scored consecutive goals in 6-on-5 opportunities, the last coming with just 6 seconds left in regulation.
Olds gave the Lancers a 7-6 lead with 2:12 to play in the first overtime when the Broncos used late heroics again, scoring with 32 seconds left to force a second overtime period. Neither team was able to find the net in the second overtime until Olds scored the game-winner with 43 seconds remaining.
Jon Miller collected 13 saves in the cage, getting 11 of them in regulation. David Graves also added a goal.
In the match with UC Santa Cruz, Jung scored all 3 of his third quarter goals to help the Lancers pull away. Ryan Steiger scored what proved to be the game-winner with 3:02 left in the third and then Jung scored twice in a 34 second span to give the Lancers an 8-5 lead. That was as close as the Banana Slugs would get.
Leonardo Laterza scored twice, getting both goals in the Lancers' 4-goal outburst in the opening quarter. The Lancers led 4-3 after the first quarter and then held that margin at halftime after neither team was able to score in the second. The Lancers then out-scored UCSC, 5-3, in the second half.
Jon Miller collected 5 saves in goal. Aaron Abellano, Looy and Callister each scored one goal.
