WREN, MONTANHA FALL IN FINALS

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Marcela Montanha and Dunya Wren won 3 matches this past weekend to advance to the finals, but ran into a buzzsaw in the form of national-power Fresno Pacific's No. 2 doubles' team of Audrey Laib and Meghan Hanner, falling to the Sunbird team, 8-4, in the finals of the 2006 Wilson/ITA Small College Regional Championships hosted by Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego, Calif.

Wren and Montanha will now wait to see if they will earn a coveted at-large berth to the 2006 Wilson/ITA National Championships Oct. 12-15 in Ft. Myers, Fla.

After getting a first-round bye, the Lancer duo defeated Point Loma Nazarene's Brittany Hall and Amy Hamilton, 8-1, in the round of 16. From there, they handled Vanguard's No. 1 doubles' team of Hana Jurcovicova and Amy Brown, 8-6, in the quarterfinals and then upended Azusa Pacific's No. 1 doubles' team of Jennifer Dao and Peggy Bell, 8-4, in the semifinals.

Both Montanha and Wren also played singles as well. Montanha advanced to the quarterfinals, while Wren made it to the round of 16.

Montana defeated The Master's Kaelyn Kraft, 6-1, 6-0, and then downed Leanne Milliken, 6-0, 6-3, of Point Loma Nazarene to advance to the quarterfinals. There, she lost to Point Loma Nazarene's Ashley Strimple, 6-4, 6-4.

Wren, meanwhile, defeated Hannah Leake of The Master's, 6-3, 7-6, before falling to Jurcovicova, 6-4, 7-5, in the round of 16.
