COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Verania Willis ripped 13 kills on just 19 swings, and the 2-time defending NAIA Champion Lancers notched 7 blocks in a 30-18, 30-16, 30-23 sweep of Vanguard Tuesday night.
The Lancers (12-1, 3-0 in Golden State Athletic Conference play) charged out of the gates with a scalding .520 (15-2-25) hitting percentage in the opening set, and never looked back, as they held Vanguard (7-4, 0-3) to paltry clips of .143, .176 and .139, respectively.
Willis came away with a match-high 4 blocks while Lindsey Siefken and Angela Willis each put up 3 blocks in the win. Freshman setter Mical Bell and Yudelka Bonilla each nailed 4 service aces, as Bonilla added 11 kills.
Up 11-9 in game one, a Vanguard service error sparked the decisive, 8-1, run that made it a 19-10 contest. Angela and Verania Willis teamed up on a block, while Bonilla added a pair of kills in the run, as California Baptist out-hit Vanguard .520 to .143 in the opening set.
Bonilla's best effort came in the second game, when the Lancers, already leading, 18-10, went to score 7 unanswered points thanks to 3 aces and a pair of kills from Bonilla. The NAIA's No. 3-ranked team hit just .257 (12-3-35) in game 2, but it was more than enough against Vanguard's .176 (10-4-34) showing.
Verania Willis crushed 10 kills in the closing set, where the Lancers hit an impressive .353 (18-6-34) and held the Lions to a .139 (12-7-36) clip.
