LOS ANGELES ? Jeanine Deno scored a season high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead California Baptist to a 78-56 win over NCAA Division II Cal State L.A. Deno scored 12 points in the second half and went 7-for-15 from the field and 4-for-10 from beyond the arc.
The Lancers (5-3) hit 40.9 percent from 3-point range and 19-of-27 from the charity stripe. CBU forced 29 turnovers and out rebounded the Golden Eagles 42-34.
Nicole Davis also scored in double figures as she finished with 10 points. Heather Couzens also had seven points and eight boards. Megan Bradford added nine points while Alyson Haley chipped in with eight. Kendra Morris also scored seven including a pair of threes.
Neither team led by more than six in the first half with Lancers holding their largest lead twice at 10-4 and 12-6. CBU led 16-11 with 13:45 left in the opening half when Cal State L.A. went on an 8-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 19-16. Brenna Hahn and Couzens each added a bucket to give the lead back to the Lancers at 20-19 before the lead changed five more times before intermission.
Deno gave CBU the lead at 27-26 with a trey before the Golden Eagles answered with a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the half at 33-27 with 4:13 left. CBU answered right back scoring seven straight to retake the lead at 34-33 on a pair of Deno free throws, CSULA got back-to-back buckets to close out the half with a 37-36 lead.
After the Golden Eagles opened the second half scoring four straight, the Lancers ripped off 23 straight points, including 10 points from Deno, to take a 59-41 lead and controlled the contest from there.
CBU outscored Cal State L.A. 42-19 in the second half.
California Baptist returns to Van Dyne Gym Thursday for a 7 p.m. contest against Ottawa (Kan.).
